The Silk Pillow

The preacher said that at the bottom of all despair

is a soft pillow of sadness that cushions

the free-fall plunge into hurt.

Plump the pillow higher up,

near the edge of simple tiredness,

where we put our heads 

when we read to end the day.

A pillow for simple slowing down,

for good night, for the time when

no one is hungry or cold

the children are tucked in their bunks,

the family is safe.

Silk pillow

for a silver head

that carries the weight of love.

Poet's Notes: Despair is more common than most people think. When promised a soft pillow to land on, I was and possibly remain a bit skeptical. At the time I wrote this I had a lovely silk pillow to give to a friend of mine who is a grandmother.
