Special Feature: "Flatland: Variations on a Ballad, Part V" by the Editor

Flatland:  Variations on a Ballad
Steven Wittenberg Gordon

V

Cold crags
echo
my eagle’s
scream

Wolf song
carries
on icy
wind.

Grizzly hug.
Rooted feet.
Flowing blood
warming fleet--

I awaken
in a plane
on a bed of blades.
My spirit fades.

Poet's Notes:  Part V is full of assonances and consonances and even a hard end-line rhyming couplet at the end, but it is no longer recognizable as a ballad.  Only the last two lines contain more than two words.  That said the roots of each chord of version I remain.  My thanks to Frequent Contributor Ross Balcom for inspiring this one.
