“The Gatecrashers” by Ross Balcom, Frequent Contributor

The Gatecrashers
Ross Balcom

1.

VISION

a storm of eyes

lightning
over the lake

choppy waters

night

a saurian rises
from the depths

2.

in the boathouse,
two magicians

take distant control
of the saurian

guide it
to the portal

the gate
of lightning

hurtle it through

3.

hurtle it into

the place
of creation

the palace
of the gods

sliding across
the marble floor

the saurian bellows

the gods
shriek

panic
pandemonium

a gift
from the dark side

4.

VISION

a storm of eyes

hailstones
on the boathouse roof

rain

soon subsiding

silence

ritual completed

the saurian swims the lake
again

5.

morning

two magicians
stagger from the boathouse

fifteen-years old

pale
strung-out

liquor
on their breath

the gatecrashers

going home

Poet's Notes: I love lake monsters; long may they swim. This is the first poem I have written that includes a lake monster, and it won't be the last. I would like to thank my two young magicians for putting the saurian "monster" to good use.
