Shanah Tovah from Songs of Eretz

A New Song
Steven Wittenberg Gordon

My dog howled as I blew
the long, final note of the shofar
adding her animal voice to the call
to repent, reflect, renew.
The wind picked up
our combined song
carried it away to reverberate
across the Kansas prairie
through the darkening Kansas sky.
I offered my faithful beast
a piece of my apple dipped in honey.
She licked off the honey first
savoring its sweetness
before devouring the crunchy fruit.
