Poem of the Day: "5am quiet --" by John Reinhart

The Songs of Eretz Poetry Review Poem of the Day for December 9, 2014 is "5am quiet --" by John Reinhart.  Mr. Reinhart's work has also been published in Songs of Eretz Poetry E-zine November 2014 (Volume 2, Issue 2, Number 9) where a brief bio may be found http://eretzsongs.blogspot.com/p/e-zine_3.html.

5am quiet –
John Reinhart

clock ticks,
a motor
somewhere
whirs lightly,
the dog
stirs;
airplane overhead
faint rumble
as thoughts
tumble
under chairs
into dark
corners
scurrying
through my
head

in this
5am quiet
the chorus
inside
insists I
listen
spurred
by coffee
and freshened
limbs;
I try
to sort
out the melody
but today
the viola
dominates
and
everyone
is
awake
before the
symphony
finishes,
turning my
5am quiet
into
day

Poet's Notes:  This poem arrived around 5am, as I sat on the kitchen floor, savoring the blissful stillness before the household erupted into its usual excitement. Children, dog, cat, chickens, goats, and obligation to a world outside the rumblings in my own head and stomach occupy the rest of the day. I have often found that having a jump start on the day is essential, though it also often results in a nap, or at least the need for one.

Editor's Note:  I enjoy the stream-of-consciousness feel and the way Mr. Reinhart captures the twilight state between sleeping and waking.  "5am quiet --" was previously published in Apeiron Review.
