Mary Carolyn Davies (b. 1888) had many poems and stories published in the 1920s in serials such as Poetry Magazine and Cosmopolitan.  Her poetry often explored gender, nature, and war.  She published little after 1930 and died in poverty.

"Songs of a Girl" is presented in five numbered parts.  Each part forms a short, stand-alone poem and is only tangentially related, if related at all, to the other parts.  The "poppies" in part IV might be a reference to World War I.
