Review of "Rock Me to Sleep" by Elizabeth Akers Allen

"Rock Me to Sleep" by Elizabeth Akers Allen (1832 - 1911) was offered by Poets.org's Poem-A-Day on November 2, 2013. A link to the poem may be found here http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/23745?utm_source=PAD%3A+Rock+Me+to+Sleep+by+Elizabeth+Akers+Allen&utm_campaign=poemaday_110213&utm_medium=email.

According to the editor's notes, this sentimental poem was popular during the Civil War. Consisting of six stanzas of eight lines each, it is at once a ballad and a lullaby (or at least a yearning for one). Each stanza ends with the refrain, "Rock me to sleep, mother, -- rock me to sleep!"
