The poem begins by describing an artist's depiction of a hand in exquisite detail.  Mid-way through, the focus of the poem shifts to the hand of the artist who created the hand.  In the end, the poet muses that the artist creates more than just a hand because the essence of the artist has been infused into the depiction, giving it a transcendent quality.
