"Self-Portrait in a Wire Jacket" by Monica Youn was offered by Poets.org's Poem-A-Day on August 8, 2013. The poem is a chilling statement on the results of authoritarian domination of the human spirit. At first, the restraints cause suffering. Eventually, one has trouble living without the restraints, just as a plant may be trained to "behave" in a certain way in a garden.
