Review of "My True Love Hath My Heart and I Have His" by Mary Elizabeth Coleridge

"My True Love Hath My Heart and I Have His" by Mary Elizabeth Coleridge (1861 - 1907) (pictured), the grandniece of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, was offered by Poets.org's Poem-A-Day on August 25, 2013. From the title, I expected a standard love poem, but I was in for a surprise.  Miss Coleridge's poem has a dark, gothic tone, and imagery that borders on the macabre.  The poet seems to personify Grief as "she," but read from a different angle, she perhaps refers to her lover as "she."
